Other threats

Apart from bycatch, there are some other threats to the seabirds: The marine pollution, the invasion of other species in places where albatrosses breeding, trawlers fishery and some diseases.

Marine pollution

The oil from fishing boats, plastics (bags, bottles, wrappers, etc.) and food containers (Styrofoam) are thrown into the water and the albatrosses take as food. There have been found dead adults as well as juveniles of albatrosses that had eaten plastics. By eating plastics the birds can die of wounds, poisoning or starvation.

Invasion of other species in breeding areas of albatrosses

This happens when one species arrives at a zone which is not native. In the case of animals, it can cause fights and competition for the food or the hatchery. It can also happen that the invasive species eats the offspring that already were living in that zone before. This case occurred in European island (Gough Island) where it have been found albatross chicks with mortal injuries caused by invasive rats.

Fishing trawlers

This fishery up to the surface of the water some species that normally live in the depth, therefore the seabirds reach types of food that wasn't available before and by wanting to eat them they can be accidently catch in the nets.

Diseases

There are some diseases that attack seabirds causing serious harm and in some cases death. These diseases are generally known as "avian diseases", among these we have cholera and the varicela that have been diagnosed on albatross.
