Fishing operations and “Pajarotes”

Fisherman who use longline travel long distances to capture sharks or Dolphin fish, also those who use gillnet. Fishermen can catch other organisms that not are fishing targets: birds, turtles and marine mammals.

The APECO observers recorded the capture to estimate the impact of fisheries on the population of these predators.

One of the most affected albatrosses by the incidental and intentional catch is Waved Albatross, an endangered species. In Peru you can observe eight species of albatrosses and more than thirty of petrels.
